The Icarus Account

"No matter how big we get, we always want to stay real and down to earth and remember where we came from, our faith, our morals, and the values that we were raised with."

They’re twin brothers who sing really great harmonies together. Their songs are uber cute and make girls all over melt. Right now, artists like Justin Bieber have girls flocking all over him, but I wouldn’t be surprised if The Icarus Account soon nabs their attention. The day I discovered them, I was in a bit of a funk so I decided to go to one of my favorite stations on Pandora and their song, “Favorite Girl” came on. The adorable lyrics put an instant smile on my face. Thanks to social networking sites being the backbone of many artists, The Icarus Account have made a name for themselves and continue to turn heads with their upbeat lyrics and great harmonies. I interviewed the two brothers to learn more about their music and their futures as artists.

Q. You two are twin brothers. What made you guys want to start up a career in music and also, why start it with each other?

A. We always loved music, ever since we were little kids. I guess it’s always been a dream of ours to have a band and tour around the country playing shows and all of that. When that dream became a reality we jumped at the opportunity.

Q. You’re currently unsigned, but have a major following via various different social networks. Do you feel having outlets such as Twitter or Facebook gives you an advantage of gaining more exposure and how has it helped you personally?

A. Most definitely! Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Myspace for a while, are all very important for unsigned bands today. It’s essentially free advertising. It just takes time. It really enables us to grow our fan base and really keep in touch with those fans. We don’t have the money, connections, or resources to reach hundreds of millions of people at once like a major label artist, but we can build up a really dedicated group of fans little by little. All of the social networks have helped us do that and most of our tours are booked by us using fans and connections that we’ve made through these networks.

Q. If you had to describe your sound to someone who has never before heard your music, how would you describe it?

A. We would describe it as acoustic pop with an indie twist. We’ve really evolved into a group of singer/songwriters that write pop songs (essentially) but we do it in our own way. We focus a lot on the fact that there are two of us so we are always trying to highlight our harmonies or our different abilities as lead vocalists.

Q. Nowadays there are so many different ways of discovering new music. How do you find new bands to support?

A. That’s a tough one because like you said there are so many different outlets available nowadays. A lot of times we discover bands by browsing through our different networks and advertising ourselves and we start to see what our fans are listening to and other bands that we’re “competing” with. We always have to be keeping up with what is “hot” in the industry so we’re always discovering the next big thing. I wouldn’t say that there is one main website or anything like that though. It’s a combination of all the different networks out there.

Q. What is the idea behind your band name and how did you come up with it?

A. The name “The Icarus Account” comes from the story if Icarus in Greek mythology. Icarus and his father were trapped on an island. To get off the island they glued wings to themselves using hot wax. Before they departed, Icarus’ father warned him to stay close by and not to do anything foolish. Once they started flying, the pride of Icarus got the best of him and he flew too high and the sun melted the wax that held his wings together. He fell to his death. To us, that story was always a reminder to stay humble and when we started the band we really wanted to be reminded of that constantly. No matter how big we get, we always want to stay real and down to earth and remember where we came from, our faith, our morals, and the values that we were raised with.

Q. Being related, are your parents supportive in your career choice?

A. We are very fortunate that both our mom and our dad are very supportive of what we do. Being in an unsigned band isn’t always the biggest moneymaker in the world, but our parents understand that it’s what we love to do. While it wasn’t always what they wanted us to do, now they’re both really encouraging of it and they have done a ton to help us get our feet of the ground and be successful.

Q. If you weren’t doing music for a living, is there anything else you aspire to do with your lives?

A. That’s a funny question to ask because I think that one of the biggest reasons that we are playing music is because we can’t see ourselves doing anything else in life. We both love music so much and want to make it as musicians, not as something else. But we both like sports alot too so if we weren’t in music we would probably try to find some way to be involved in the sports industry. Ty could probably be a physical therapist or something and I would probably want to do something with the business aspect of a pro sports team.

Q. What has been one of the most memorable shows you’ve ever played?

A. Probably our first show ever out of the country. We played a show in London, Ontario for about 100+ kids and every single one of them knew every word to everyone of our songs. It was a really cool experience, especially being out of the states. I think it made us realize how big we were actually getting.

Q. What is one thing you would like all of your fans to know about you?

A. That we appreciate them listening more than they could ever know and that we will be making music for a long long time!

Q. If you were stranded on an island for the rest of your life and could only bring one of your songs to listen to, which one would it be and why?

A. Oh man that’s a tough one. Our favorite song to play live right now is “Favorite Girl.” It has really caught on well with our fans and is a blast to play live cause everyone sings it right back to us! So, probably that one because it would remind us of how awesome our fans are! Either that or “Life is Beautiful.” That’s a really old song, but it has tons of deepness and meaning to us, and the recording is so raw. I think it reminds us that even when life is tough it’s worth it to keep pushing forward.

Here is their song, Favorite Girl, that is sure to put a smile on your face.
The End.
